5 Easy Ways to Get Out of Reading Slump

Every now and then, I believe we face this common yet serious block if not treated properly. I even usually have this reading slump at least once every 2 or three months 😂

But don’t be afraid my friends, after years formulating and tackling this issue, i sort of find some easy ways to get out of reading slump. Here are the step by step you can also try when you have reading slump :

🧘🏽‍♀️ Reflect on your last reading

The first thing I want to encourage you to do is to reflect on the last book/reading, by reviewing its genre, its story, what you like and dislike from it.

The most effective reflection you can do is by reviewing your Goodreads account. I really recommend you to have a platform like Goodreads, to monitor your reading progress in granular. In this platform you can set your annual target, and review the progress for the time being.

For me personally, if I have reading slump, I will first check my Goodreads account and see what’s my progress compared to annual target. If my progress is still on check, I usually takes my time to get out of the slump 😊 But, if my progress is waaay behind annual target, then I will jump to the next step..

🥰 Reread your Favorite Book

Reading slump happens mostly because we feel demotivated to read, feels like the enjoyment of reading is gone. However, it doesn’t mean you dislike reading forever. This feeling is only temporary my friend, don’t worry.

To remind you about the pleasure of reading process, don’t hesitate to revisit your favorite book again. The book that you’ve read for hundredth of time, which cover’s already change colors, the book which gives you comfort and happiness. I know you have THAT book in your mind now 😌

Some Of My Favorite Book :

Origin by Dan Brown, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK. Rowling, and anything from Andrea Hirata

🔹 Focus on Small Achievement

We can not deny that reading process takes a lot of energy out of us. And sometimes, we just don’t have any left, after taking care of everything else in our life, like work, family, friendship, relationship, and others, so when it comes you have time for reading, you just don’t have any energy left.

That’s why, in this step, i really really recommend for you to focus on making a small achievement. Pick a thin, slim, light book with maximum about 100 pages, a book you can finish in one sitting. Finishing this book will give us a sense of achievement, a new motivation, without dreading the energy too much.

You can't go wrong with comic book or my hero ; poetry book.

🎢 Change Routine

When you have reading slump, one of the easiest trick i use is to be more creative. I love to try and experimenting with my reading process, including changing my reading space, from my room to cafe or to the park. I also usually change the media, from paper to ebook, or even audio book.

But currently, i found out that for me personally, I can’t read the same genre back to back, meaning that once I finished thriller book for example, the next book must be non thriller. I feel it’s very overwhelming for me to continuously read the same genre, so i just spice it up, and it really works for me. You can also try this trick.

😴 Spare Time to Rest

Last step that I would recommend is to simply take some rest..

Reading is undeniably a tiring process some time, it took couple hours of your day, and sometimes your body is just tired and your eyes sore. So, it’s okay to take some time out and have a proper rest during the weekend, enjoy your time with family and friends 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

I also usually allow myself for some rest in the range of 1 week to 1 month without any reading progress 😂

Don’t forget that the essential of reading is to added some value for yourself, to open new perspective, to widen our knowledge, and also to bring us happiness. So please make sure that you can get all of the benefit above without the expense of another..
